The Terminal 3 corridor emulated the aerial view of the runways at Manchester Airport embedding the design into the finish of the plaster. The sunken finish perfectly balanced with the smooth polished Italian plaster of the rest of the wall. As the plaster began to shrink, the surface tension created in order to achieve the finish, meant that, unless the substrate was right it could conceivably fall off the wall. The substrate had to be tested to ensure the bonding was perfect when the finish was applied. DESIGN BRIEF The whole house had its entire internals removed, leaving an empty shell. It was then a blank canvas for reconstruction. This project was an exacting, architect led, design, driven by a client with a passion. The stairwell wall was designed to be a monolithic, continuous, three story wall, which had the staircase ‘floating’ off it. The relief of the texture had an iridescence which caught the light from the skylight beautifully and gradually changed the further down through the house as it went.
